Play1 Team Offseason Report: Cumberland Volleyball (Virginia)

Offseason Focus

For Cumberland Volleyball, this offseason is all about going back to the basics and building a stronger physical foundation through strength conditioning. Coach Harvey is emphasizing fundamentals to ensure his young squad enters the season with confidence and control.

Notable Additions & Departures

Coach Harvey is preparing for life without four graduating seniors, including two valuable leaders. While their departure leaves a gap, there’s a fresh sense of excitement surrounding the younger athletes ready to step in. The returning group is “hungry and ready,” fully aware of the high expectations within the program.

Players to Watch

Every young player on the roster has something to prove. They are eager to play and hungry for success. The youth brings excitement and a new level of competitiveness to the team as they try to elevate to a new level of standard and commitment.

Nutrition

Coach Harvey plans to collaborate with the school’s chef to develop a nutrition plan that’s both performance-focused and realistic. The aim is to balance what athletes need with what they’ll actually eat—because as Coach notes, “we know they are picky eaters!”

Coaching Perspective

The coaching staff is staying sharp by attending clinics and continually searching for new methods to make their athletes better. The focus isn’t just on individual skill growth, but also on building team chemistry and cohesion.

Biggest Challenges Ahead

The biggest hurdle? Youth and unfamiliarity. With so many new players stepping into important roles, the team will need to rebuild chemistry from the ground up. Coach Harvey acknowledges the challenge of getting to know each other again—but he sees it as an opportunity to grow and surprise people.

Coach Harvey and the Dukes are headed into a new chapter with a youthful, hungry roster and a clear commitment to growth. Cumberland may be young, but with the right foundation, they could become a team to watch as the season unfolds.
