Play1 Team Offseason Spotlight: Coronado High School Volleyball
Offseason Focus
The Coronado Thunderbirds are laser-focused on becoming better athletes this offseason. The program emphasizes strength training, plyometrics, and speed development to build power and explosiveness. On the court, the emphasis is on aggressive serving and executing a faster tempo offense—two areas that could give the team an edge despite a younger lineup.
Special Offseason Events
Two key events are helping the team prepare:
Spring League at Coronado: Competitive matches in a structured league setting help simulate game pressure.
Summer Team Camp at UT El Paso: Held in late July and run by Coach Ben Wallis and staff, this camp provides valuable reps, team bonding, and collegiate-level instruction.
Notable Additions & Departures
The team graduated six seniors, leaving behind some big shoes to fill. While that means a youth movement is underway, it also opens the door for a very athletic group of returners and newcomers to rise and contribute. The staff is optimistic that athleticism can help offset inexperience in key positions.
Weight Lifting & Fitness
Coronado’s offseason program stands out for its well-rounded physical development, incorporating:
Weight training
Plyometric exercises
Speed and agility work
These components are not only building strength, but also improving injury prevention and overall on-court performance.
Coaching Perspective
Coach Lawrence and his staff are actively developing their strategy and staying current by attending the Art of Coaching Volleyball clinic in Colorado. The focus heading into the season will be:
Tough serving
Improved serve receive/passing
Executing a fast-tempo offense
This approach is designed to keep opponents off balance and maximize the team’s athletic potential.
Biggest Challenges Ahead
Youth and inexperience will be the key challenges this season. However, the Thunderbirds are determined to compete fiercely—regardless of the outcome—and develop a competitive edge that can carry them deep into the season.
