2025 Fall Football Season Preview: River Valley High School

Offseason Focus: Building Strength and Speed

River Valley's offseason focus has been simple but critical: developing strength and speed. Under the guidance of Head Coach Steve McAvena, the team is committed to improving physical performance as they prepare to tackle a challenging season with a younger roster.

New Leadership on the Sidelines

The Vikings will see some big changes in the coaching staff this year with the addition of a new offensive coordinator and a new defensive coordinator. These changes aim to inject fresh energy and strategic thinking into both sides of the ball.

Players to Watch: Hunt and Loveday Lead the Way

River Valley returns some standout talent, and all eyes will be on two key contributors:

Cash Hunt – A returning playmaker who’s expected to take on a leading role this season.

Ben Loveday – Another impact player putting in the work this offseason.

Both players are running track to improve speed and maintaining consistent weight room attendance, setting the tone for their teammates through example and effort.

Coaching Strategy: Back to Basics, Focused on Physicality

Coach McAvena and his staff are focused on the fundamentals. “We’re just working on getting our kids stronger and faster,” says McAvena. With a younger team on the field, physical readiness will be a key factor in the Vikings’ ability to compete.

Biggest Challenge: Youth Movement in Full Swing

River Valley is entering the 2025 season with a young roster after graduating several key seniors. While inexperience can be a hurdle, Coach McAvena is confident this group is “up for the challenge.” The focus is now on player development and gaining valuable experience early in the season.
