The 2024–25 season was a historic one for the J.W. Mitchell High School Girls Varsity Basketball team, led by Head Coach James Devins. With a 20-8 record, a second-place finish in their district, and a return to the state playoffs for the first time in 14 years, this group of Mustangs made their mark.
Key Contributors Lead the Charge
Three standout players were at the heart of the Mustangs' success:
PG Kaylana Little led the team in scoring at 10.9 points per game, setting the tone offensively.
PF Priya Jacob was a dominant force inside, averaging a near double-double with 10.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Brianna Coure added grit and hustle with 7.6 points and 4.7 steals per game, creating chaos for opposing offenses.
Season Highlights
Coach Devins summed it up simply: "Excellent." The team’s signature win came in a regular season battle against rival Sunlake, where they secured a hard-fought 52-46 victory—a pivotal moment that proved they belonged among the region's best.
Rising Stars Stepping Up
As the season progressed, several underclassmen grew into critical roles:
Hailey Malik (#10),
Sydney Reinhart (#3), and
Malaya Hunter (#2)
…all stepped up and contributed significantly to the team’s success, laying the groundwork for the future.
A Resilient, United Team
Despite facing tough games and high-pressure moments, the Mustangs responded with heart and determination. "We were a very resilient group," said Devins. Their ability to stay locked in and compete through adversity was one of the defining traits of the season.
Senior Impact
The senior class brought strong performance and energy that helped power the team's turnaround and inspired the next generation of players.
Looking Ahead
With eight players returning and new talent entering the program, Coach Devins is optimistic about building on this year’s momentum. The focus this offseason will be on boosting the team’s basketball IQ and improving overall shooting percentage—two areas that could help take the Mustangs to the next level.
