As the new golf season approaches, the Dobyns-Bennett Girls Golf Team is preparing with a clear mission: sharpen their skills, build team chemistry, and compete with excellence—on and off the course. Head Coach Bill Darnell leads the team with a strong focus on development and character, preparing the girls not just for a strong season, but for life beyond the green.

Offseason Focus

This offseason, the team is zeroing in on the short game and putting—a critical area that can make all the difference during competition. “Putting is a vital part of the game that our players want to improve in,” says Coach Darnell. By dedicating extra practice time to these elements, the team aims to gain a competitive edge when the season tees off.

Special Offseason Events

Rather than group events, players are encouraged to compete in individual tournaments throughout the offseason. These experiences allow them to stay sharp and challenge themselves against strong competition. “Competing with skilled players in the offseason helps them stay in stride when our season begins,” says Darnell.

Notable Additions & Departures

There’s plenty to be excited about on this year’s roster. Two incoming freshmen are expected to contribute right away, while a sophomore returning from injury will also play a key role. Her comeback adds depth and experience to a team already poised for success.

Players to Watch

Two seniors stand out for their leadership and dedication. In particular, Aliezah Robinson is a name to remember—she’s a fierce competitor with the potential to win a state championship. “All levels of her game have improved each year,” says Coach Darnell. “She’s excited to display her skills and finish her high school career on a high note.”

Weight Lifting & Fitness

Dobyns-Bennett benefits from one of the top training facilities in the area. With customized training programs for each athlete, players stay strong, flexible, and healthy year-round. The school’s commitment to athletic excellence shines through in every workout.

Nutrition

Nutrition and conditioning go hand in hand. The team incorporates balanced nutrition guidance into their training regimen to support overall wellness and peak performance on the course.

Coaching Strategy

This offseason, the coaching staff is working to maximize every practice session. From building consistency in routines to targeting specific areas of the game, the team is focused on being purposeful and productive. “Each practice has a focus—we’re working smarter, not just harder,” notes Darnell.

Fan Engagement & Community Impact

While offseason fan engagement remains modest, the program continues to be a positive force within the school and local community. With a foundation built on sportsmanship and integrity, the team serves as a great example of student-athlete leadership.

Biggest Challenges Ahead

The biggest challenge? Balancing improvement on the course with growth off of it. “Our goal is to help our athletes improve their game,” Coach Darnell says, “but more importantly, teach them how to be better people. Respect the game and everyone involved with it. Approach life with a Christian attitude and glorify God in all they do.”
