Building Strength and Speed
The offseason at Newton High has been all about getting stronger and faster. “We’ve spent multiple days each week in the weight room focusing on leg and shoulder strength,” said Head Coach Steven Gunn. With speed and physicality playing a huge role in flag football, the team is investing early to stay competitive.
Offseason Events & Team Bonding
This summer, Newton will compete in the prestigious Corky Kell Classic, held in July at West Forsyth High School. “It’s a great opportunity to compete against top-tier teams and see where we stand,” Coach Gunn said. In addition to the tournament, the team has scheduled several joint practices to build chemistry and learn from other programs.
Roster Outlook: Returning Core & Youth Stepping Up
The Rams are returning a solid core—6 starters on defense and 5 on offense—creating a strong foundation heading into the new season. “We’re excited about the younger players stepping into bigger roles, but having experienced juniors and seniors who know our system is a huge advantage,” Gunn said. The coaching staff remains intact, though there’s interest in expanding, especially with the hope of building out a JV and possibly even a 9th-grade team.
Players to Watch
Offensively, all eyes will be on returning quarterback Mya Perry, who will have a familiar group around her with Aryanah Clark, Jordan Devoe, and Taliyah Church—three of the team’s top four receivers—also back. On defense, with six returners and a record of 11 shutouts in 24 games last season, the unit looks poised to dominate again.
Coaching Strategies & Film Study
Coach Gunn is a student of the game. “I’ve spent a lot of the offseason watching film—especially from teams in Florida and at the college level,” he shared. “I enjoy studying both sides of the ball and hope to apply new ideas to elevate our play.”
Community Connection
Off the field, Newton’s players have been active in the community. One recent highlight was volunteering at the local Special Olympics, an experience that underscored the team’s commitment to giving back and being visible role models.
Challenges Ahead
While Newton is coming off a strong season, Coach Gunn knows the toughest opponent might be complacency. “We had a big step forward last year, but now we face a tougher schedule,” he said. “Our biggest challenge will be staying humble, staying hungry, and proving we belong at the top.”
