Conant Girls Flag Football Building Momentum in Year Two

Offseason Focus: Strength, Speed & New Faces

Entering its second year, Conant’s Girls Flag Football program is focused on growth—from building strength and speed to bringing in a new wave of players.

“We’re actively recruiting and emphasizing agility and fitness to match the game’s pace,” said Head Coach Lorel Cunningham. “There’s real energy and momentum around the team.”

Building for the Future: Summer Camp Incoming

While the team isn’t traveling to tournaments this offseason, they’re taking development into their own hands. This June, Conant will host a summer camp for current students and incoming freshmen, with a focus on game prep, skill development, and introducing newcomers to the sport.

“It’s a great way to build excitement and get more athletes involved,” Cunningham said.

Graduation Gaps: Adjusting After Senior Departures

The Cougars graduated five seniors from last season’s varsity roster, all of whom played key roles in launching the program. With a different team makeup in 2025, the coaching staff is working to adapt strategy and fill leadership gaps.

Players to Watch: Rising Talent and Returning Stars

Several returning players are expected to make major impacts this season:

Arianna Dugo (QB, Junior) – poised to lead the offense

Annabel Danso, Madyson Biedke, Stelliah Howard (WRs) – solid hands and route running

Rhianna Houston (RB) – dangerous with her speed

Defensive standouts – Vanya Fraustro, Ella Bode, Jenna Ahrens, Hannah Hsu, Klara Kloucek

Centers – Daniella Mola and Sophia Rodriguez, who may see more action in receiving roles this fall

Coaching Growth: Learning, Networking, and Refining

Still early in its program journey, the Conant coaching staff has been sharpening its own skills through clinics and local networking, entering the 2025 season with clearer structure and renewed focus.

“We’re learning fast,” said Coach Cunningham. “This year we’re more organized, more prepared, and excited to see what we can continue—and what we can improve.”

Challenges Ahead: Expectations and Competition Rising

As more Illinois schools embrace girls flag football, Conant expects tougher competition and higher expectations. Replacing last year’s seniors will be a challenge, but it’s one the team is ready for.

“We know we have work to do,” said Cunningham. “But we’re excited for what’s ahead.”

Community Connection: Early Stages, Big Potential

While offseason engagement is still growing, the program maintains an active Instagram account and hopes to use social platforms more in the future to spotlight players and events.
