Play1 Team Offseason Spotlight: Brentwood High Golf

Offseason Focus

The Brentwood High golf team has remained highly competitive this offseason, practicing and playing in tournaments to stay sharp. A key area of focus has been developing greater consistency—learning how to salvage a round when scores aren’t low, and staying mentally resilient from hole to hole.

Special Offseason Events

A major highlight of the offseason will be the team’s participation in the NHSGA National Invitational at Pinehurst in July. This prestigious event marks the third national appearance in four years for Brentwood, underscoring the program’s strong national presence and tradition of excellence.

Notable Additions & Departures

The graduation of Jack Doyle and Sam Johnson represents a significant transition for the team. Both were instrumental in securing three state championships and contributing to top national finishes. Their leadership and performance leave big shoes to fill, but the team is poised to step up.

Players to Watch

The spotlight now shifts to three returning seniors:

Graham O’Neal

Bennett Lynd

Luke Purifoy – a returning All-State performer

Additionally, Jimmy Grimes has shown great offseason improvement and is pushing for a top spot. Keep an eye on George Laskaris and Tripp Goodrich, two rising sophomores with breakout potential heading into the season.

Weight Lifting & Fitness / Team Bonding

Coach Saunders has introduced creative and competitive offseason training activities to foster skill development and team unity.

The Bruin Cup, modeled after the Ryder Cup, features captains drafting teams and competing in various match play formats.

Also popular is a 1v1 tournament based on handicap, giving every golfer a fair and fun way to compete while getting to know their teammates better.

Nutrition

No formal nutrition program is in place, but proper fueling is encouraged among athletes, particularly during long tournament days.

Coaching Perspective

Coach Saunders and his staff continue to emphasize mental toughness, team chemistry, and in-round strategy. By simulating high-pressure situations through internal competitions like the Bruin Cup, the coaching staff is preparing players to perform under pressure throughout the season.

Biggest Challenges Ahead

Brentwood faces the tough task of emerging from Tennessee’s most competitive district to reach the state tournament. With schools across Williamson County boasting strong golf programs, consistency through the postseason will be critical. The goal is clear: Return to state and win—but it’ll take focus and grit to get there.
