Introduction:

With resilience echoing through the hallways of Estrella Foothills High School (EFHS), we turn our attention to the Boys Volleyball team, a cohort of young athletes who have shown fortitude, determination, and a drive for success throughout their season. As we appreciate their strength and tenacity, we conversed with Coach Michael Matteson to get an in-depth insight into their journey.

Season Highlights and Key Contributors:

The remarkable coordination and cooperation between senior setter Ruben Matos, senior Libero Cruz Alvarado, and junior Middle Blocker Lawson Hardman, led to an impressive performance this season. Matos spearheaded the offensive strategy with 1163 career set assists, while Alvarado demonstrated his strength in defence with 215 digs and 508 receptions. On the frontline, Hardman delivered an impressive 285 kills and 58 blocks.

Unforeseen Challenges and the Turning Point:

Despite the incredible individual and team performances, the season was not without its struggles. Coach Matteson acknowledged that "Our season was not the one we wanted," but found consolation in the fact that they still finished the season ranked 16th in the state and made it into playoffs. The defining moment of the season was the thrilling match against region rival, Agua Fria, that saw the team recording a major victory. It was not just the win, but the resilience shown by the team that poised them for future success.

Embracing Leadership and Growth Opportunities:

Sophomore Opposite Vann Wente emerged as a key player who matured and developed into a strong leader. With 176 kills and 39 blocks, Vente not only solidified his position in the squad but paved the way for the future. The senior duo, Matos and Alvarado, provided exemplary leadership on and off the court. Their unwavering commitment and positive energy significantly influenced the team spirit and overall performance.

Looking to the Future:

Despite the fluctuating success, the future of EFHS Boys Volleyball team seems promising. The returnees, and influx of talented players in the Junior Varsity level and incoming freshmen shows that promising days lay ahead. The excitement is palpable as Coach Matteson looks forward to amping up team's serve receive in the upcoming season.

The Boys Volleyball team at Estrella Foothills High School showcased their extraordinary grit by trying their best and bouncing back in difficult situations.
